Tenerife North Airport Car Hire
Tenerife North Airport (TFN), historically known as Los Rodeos Airport, is the main gateway for travellers heading to the green northern coast of Tenerife. Situated on the high plateau of San Cristóbal de La Laguna, it is the most convenient airport if you are holidaying in the historic resort of Puerto de la Cruz.

TFN to Puerto de la Cruz: the Drive
The drive from Tenerife North Airport to Puerto de la Cruz is a relatively short, scenic journey along the northern coast. The distance is approximately 28 kilometres, and in normal traffic conditions, the drive takes only 25 to 30 minutes.
Upon leaving the airport terminal, you will exit the airport grounds (the Exit 11 area) and merge directly onto the TF-5 motorway (Autovía del Norte) heading west towards Puerto de la Cruz and Icod de los Vinos. The TF-5 is completely toll-free, well-signposted, and generally easy to navigate.
As you approach your destination, you have two primary options for entering the town:
- Exit 32 (Puerto de la Cruz / Martiánez): Take this exit if you are staying in the eastern hotel district, near the Martianez pools, or the historic town centre.
- Exit 36 (Playa Jardín / Loro Parque): Continue to this exit if your accommodation is on the western side of the town, or if you are heading straight to the famous Playa Jardín or Loro Parque.
Important Driving Hazards to Keep in Mind
#### 1. Sudden Advection Fog at La Laguna
The first 10 kilometres of your drive along the TF-5 cross the high-altitude plateau of San Cristóbal de La Laguna (at around 600 metres above sea level). This area is known for sudden, dense advection fog—locally known as bruma.
Because of the moisture-laden trade winds hitting the northern slopes, this fog can descend rapidly, dropping visibility to near zero in a matter of minutes, particularly on late-evening arrivals. If you encounter this, reduce your speed immediately, turn on your fog lights, and increase your distance from the vehicle ahead. Once you begin your descent towards the coast past El Sauzal, the fog often clears to reveal clear, sunny coastal views.
#### 2. TF-5 Roadworks (2026–2028)
Major infrastructure upgrades are taking place on the northern motorway. From 2026 through to 2028, extensive roadworks are scheduled along the TF-5 to construct a dedicated third lane. Designed to alleviate morning commuter congestion, these works can result in temporary lane closures, speed restrictions, and diversions, particularly overnight. If you have a late-night flight arrival, expect potential night lane closures and allow an extra 10 to 15 minutes for your journey.
Landed at Tenerife South (TFS) Instead?
While Tenerife North is the closest airport to Puerto de la Cruz, the vast majority of UK charter and low-cost flights (including Jet2, EasyJet, TUI, and Ryanair) land at Tenerife South Airport (TFS), also known as Reina Sofía.
If you land at TFS, your journey to Puerto de la Cruz is significantly longer. The drive is approximately 92 kilometres and typically takes between 1 hour 15 minutes and 1 hour 25 minutes.
The Route from TFS to the North
From Tenerife South Airport, you will join the TF-1 motorway heading northeast towards the capital, Santa Cruz de Tenerife. After approximately 50 minutes of driving, you must transition to the TF-5 westbound to reach Puerto de la Cruz.
To do this, you must take the TF-2 link road. This short motorway connects the TF-1 and TF-5, bypassing the congested city centre of Santa Cruz.
Avoid the Common "Tired-Driver" Error
A very common mistake made by tired UK drivers who have just completed a four-hour flight is missing the TF-2 interchange. If you miss this exit (located near Santa María del Mar and Añaza), you will continue straight along the TF-1 and drop directly into the busy, complex city-centre traffic of Santa Cruz. Navigating the capital's one-way systems, roundabouts, and tunnels at night can be highly stressful. Pay close attention to the overhead gantry signs for the TF-2 and La Laguna as you approach the metropolitan area.
The Public Transport Dilemma
If you choose not to hire a car at TFS, getting to Puerto de la Cruz via public transport can be difficult. The direct TITSA public bus (Route 343) connects the two airports but is relatively infrequent, and has its last departure in the early evening.
If your flight lands late, or is delayed, you will miss the last direct bus. This leaves you with slow, multi-stop connecting buses via Santa Cruz, an expensive taxi, or a pre-booked private transfer. For a late TFS arrival, a hire car or a pre-booked transfer is a realistic necessity.
Picking Up at the Airport vs in Puerto
When booking your car, you need to decide whether to collect it immediately at the airport terminal or wait until you arrive at your resort in Puerto de la Cruz.
Airport Pickups: Conveniences and Pitfalls
If you want the convenience of stepping off the plane and getting straight on the road, airport collection is ideal. Canarian operators such as CICAR and Autoreisen maintain desks inside the arrivals terminals at both TFN and TFS.
These local suppliers are highly recommended because they operate clear, comprehensive no-excess, no-deposit cover schemes. This means the price you are quoted is the price you pay, with no large pre-authorisations held on your credit card. To learn more about how local car hire insurance works, read our guide on Tenerife car hire insurance explained.
By contrast, many UK tourists who book through budget international suppliers (such as Goldcar) at TFS report experiencing "deposit-shock". Upon arrival at the desk, they are often surprised by demands for credit card deposits of €1,000 to €2,000, or pressure to purchase expensive local daily insurance policies to waive the deposit.
In-Resort Pickups: A Stress-Free Alternative
If you prefer to avoid the airport rental desks altogether, you can book a direct transfer to your hotel and collect a hire car in town a few days later. This is a good way to save money if you only plan to use a car for part of your holiday.
In Puerto de la Cruz, we recommend local providers such as Volcanic Car Hire, located in the town centre at Calle Aceviños 12. Alternatively, many local suppliers offer hotel delivery, where they will bring the car directly to your accommodation and complete the paperwork in your hotel lobby. This option avoids airport queues and deposit-related stress.
What to Check Before You Drive Off
To stay safe, legal, and avoid any unexpected charges on the Canarian roads, perform these essential checks before leaving the car hire bay:
- V-16 Connected Emergency Beacon: Under Spanish royal decree (RD 159/2021), traditional hazard warning triangles are being replaced. Since 1 January 2026, it is strictly mandatory to carry a certified, connected V-16 flashing amber beacon inside the vehicle (usually in the glovebox). If you are stopped by the police and do not have this device, you face an immediate €200 fine. Ensure this device is present in your glovebox before driving off.
- Fuel Policy: Check your rental agreement's fuel terms. The fairest policy is "full-to-full" (returning the car with the same amount of fuel as you received). Avoid pre-purchase fuel policies, which often include non-refundable administration fees.
- Unlimited Mileage: Ensure your agreement includes unlimited mileage. Tenerife is larger than many visitors expect, and you will want the freedom to drive south to chase the sunshine, or head up the winding mountain roads to the Mount Teide National Park. Plan your route with our Puerto de la Cruz to Teide drive guide.
- Damage Photography: Carefully inspect the car. Take clear photos and videos of the exterior (including the wheels, which are easily scuffed) and the interior. Ensure any existing damage is fully documented on your rental agreement.
- Licence Requirements: A UK photocard driving licence is fully valid for driving in Spain as a tourist; you do not need an International Driving Permit (IDP). Make sure to bring your physical photocard licence with you. Note that certain multinational brands, such as Europcar, have strict terms and may ask to see both parts of your licence (including paper counterparts for older styles) or run extra identity verifications, so check your voucher terms carefully.
